BILOXI Main Street DISTRICT unveils 2009 Christmas Ornament

Once again BILOXI MAIN STREET DISTRICT acknowledges a significant Biloxi landmark with a collector’s edition Christmas ornament. This year’s design features Barq’s Birthplace.

In 1898 in New Orleans, Louisiana, Edward Barq, Sr. married Elodie Graugnard and moved to Biloxi and purchased the Biloxi Artesian Bottling Works on Keller Avenue.  They began bottling soft drinks, washing bottles and making formulas at night and delivering drinks by day.   In 1936 the plant was moved to a large production plant on Lameuse Street.  Edward Barq Sr. passed away in 1943.  His son, Edward Barq, Jr. assumed the business and the bottlers grew to over 200 nation wide.  Edward Jr. passed away in 1970.  The Descendants of the Edward Barq, Jr. sold the business to two New Orleans businessmen, John Koerner and John Oudt.  In 1995 the Coca-Cola Company acquired the Barq's companies.  Barq's root beer is now distributed world wide.  The Original building is still located on Keller Avenue.

This is the thirteenth in a series of collector’s edition Christmas ornaments. Previous ornaments in the series include the witch weathervane on the old Peoples Bank, the Biloxi Lighthouse, the Church of the Redeemer, the Saenger Theatre, the Breilmaier House, and the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Biloxi City Hall, West End Fire Company Museum, Dantzler House, the Bond Grant House, Mary Mahoney’s, and The Old Biloxi Hospital.  All ornaments are now available for sale at the Bond-Grant House 932 Howard Ave.

Proceeds from the sale of the BILOXI MAIN STREET Christmas ornaments assist in the work of promoting, preserving and revitalizing downtown Biloxi. The 2009 ornament is $20.00 each, tax included. The remaining ornaments from previous years are $25.00 each, including tax and supplies are very limited.  You can purchase the complete set of 13 of $260.

BILOXI Main Street DISTRICT 2008 Christmas Ornament

Once again BILOXI MAIN STREET DISTRICT acknowledges a significant Biloxi landmark with a collector’s edition Christmas ornament. This year’s design features the “Old Biloxi Hospital”.

The Old Hospital was located on 401 Beach Blvd..  The land was donated by Harry T. Howard to a Methodist missionary who had started a hospital in her home. In 1928, construction began on a new 3 story brick and concrete facility on the Howard property.  It was build with private funds totaling $125,000.  The dedication was held on July 3, 1929.  In 1936 the hospital was incorporated and chartered as the New Biloxi Hospital.  In 1947, the Biloxi Hospital reverted back to a private, non-sectarian corporation.  The Howard Memorial Hospital moved to Back Bay in 1963.  The old facility on Beach Blvd. became the Gulf Coast Convalescent Center which operated until Oct.31, 1979.  It was renovated in October 1984 and opened as the Biloxi Regional Outreach, a treatment center.  It remained a Specialty Hospital until Hurricane Katrina destroyed it in August 2005.

This is the twelfth in a series of collector’s edition Christmas ornaments. Previous ornaments in the series include the witch weathervane on the old Peoples Bank, the Biloxi Lighthouse, the Church of the Redeemer, the Saenger Theatre, the Breilmaier House, and the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Biloxi City Hall, West End Fire Company Museum, Dantzler House, the Bond Grant House, and Mary Mahoney’s.  All of the pervious years’ ornaments are now available at the Bond-Grant House.

Main Street Biloxi Preserving A Piece of Biloxi History

Main Street Biloxi (MSB) is proud to take the first steps to restoring Biloxi History.
Main Street Biloxi is proud to have the opportunity to save one of the few historical homes remaining on the coast The Bond-Grant House.  The House was built in 1904 by William K. Dukate as a wedding present for his daughter Vera, who married B. A. Bond.

The Beau Rivage purchased the property where the house sat on, when they purchased the former First Baptist Church property.  The Beau Rivage donated the House to Main Street and MSB was able to lease land from the City across the street to be able to move the house to the corner of Howard and Bohn.

Main Street is excited to have this opportunity to bring a piece of history back to life. With so many historic buildings lost to Katrina, MSB felt it was important to preserve this piece of Biloxi’s history.  MSB also lost their office to Katrina, so this house is an opportunity to have an office and a meeting room.  With much interest from the community, we would love to be able to open the house for community functions, but this all depends on what type of funding we are able to secure.  MSB has set up an account at any Wachovia Bank to accept any donations for anyone interested in contributing.

The first phase of restoration has begun with it being moved to its new location on March 6, 2006.  Now we are about to put a new roof on it and put a foundation under it.   We will be looking for volunteers and or contributions to help us move to phase II, to start with the inside work on the house.

For those who are interested in learning more about Main Street Biloxi, please visit the Main Street office at 137 Lameuse Street Biloxi, MS, 39530, call 228-435-6339, or visit our web site: www.mainstreetbiloxi.com.
